TAX FORMS

San Antonio Public Libraries carry some tax forms with the Central Library's Government Documents Department (2nd floor) providing the largest variety of forms. Call 207-2500 to see if the form you seek is available at the Central Library. See the Tax Web Sites section for web sites providing forms.

Reproducible tax forms are available and may be copied for a fee.

TAX ASSISTANCE

Income tax assistance will be provided by volunteers from Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or V.I.T.A. and by the American Association of Retired Persons (A.A.R.P.) These services are provided by volunteers and should the volunteer(s) not show up, there will be no assistance even though it is scheduled. This service is especially for persons with low incomes and senior citizens needing help with the basic 1040 and 1040EZ tax form.

The tax assistance service will be offered between February 1 and April 14, 2001 at most branch libraries and at the Central Library (for dates, times, and locations see the calendar below.)

Library staff are not trained to help with your tax questions.  For answers to your basic tax-related questions, consult with one of the volunteers from V.I.T.A. or A.A.R.P., or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

TAX WEB SITES

• Internal Revenue Service - The IRS has done a super job of providing access to tax information on this site. Includes a daily bulletin of tax news, links to tax information for individuals and business, a tax calendar, taxpayer help and education, forms and publications, and a locator for where to file. Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (library computers already have this program loaded) on your computer to view and print forms and publications. (Caution: Some forms are for informational use only and may not be used for filing). Check out the Tax Trails, interactive sessions with simple questions you answer to determine if you are eligible for deductions, credits, etc.

• H&R Block - A commercial site from H&R Block that offers some great tax information in "Tax Center", divided by subject. The nifty Refund Estimator estimates your tax bill based on 2000 tax rates and rules. The site also includes information about the company’s products and services, and an office locator. There is a downloadable tax forms archive, which requires Adobe Acrobat on your computer to view and print the forms.

• Tax and Accounting Sites Directory - A directory of tax and accounting related links. Includes links to IRS sites, policy groups, online tax preparation services, a tax bookstore, and tax software. Allows keyword searching of the site.

• Tax Resources on the Internet - Comprehensive information on taxes in the United States. Most of the links are complete with annotations on contents and most of the pages have introductory paragraphs for each topic covered. The place to start if you want to know about income taxes and the best resources on the Internet.

• Taxweb - A directory for federal, state and local tax-related information. Includes FAQs and tax news, as well as links to federal and state tax legislation and tax forms. Includes state and federal contact information on where to file and get refunds.
