Netopedia:
A Librarian's Guide to Internet Reference

Using the Internet as a reference tool can be challenging. Anybody, anywhere can publish on the Web, making locating relevant and reliable sources difficult. The Internet Workgroup has created the Netopedia to help San Antonio Public Library staff realize the full potential of the Internet as an indispensable reference tool.

The Bibliography and Review Sources sections will provide you with guidelines and advice for evaluating information on the Internet and using the information in a library setting. The Style Manuals section lists resources to help you cite Internet sources. Our Top 25 Reference Sites will introduce you to a few of the excellent resources currently available. The Internet is constantly changing, so please refer to the Selected Websites by Topic, an annotated subject listing of useful sites put together by the Internet Workgroup. The Professional section will guide you to great sites that will help you do your job. The Internet Explorer section provides basic instruction in using Microsoft’s web browser and finally, we have provided important library policies relating to use of the Internet. These include REF/RA L.A.D. 10.3: Statement of Ethics for Delivering Reference Services, REF/RA L.A.D. 40.2: Electronic Reference Service: Using the Internet as a Reference Tool, REF/RA L.A.D. 40.5: Equipment, and REF/RA L.A.D. 40.6: Internet Use Policy.

The Netopedia is by no means a comprehensive encyclopedia on using the Internet. This "starter kit" is designed to get you thinking about the Internet as another source for helping patrons with their reference needs. Undoubtedly, you will discover new and useful sites on your own.
